It’s not often you listen to someone on a whim and get blown away by what you hear. Having heard nothing of Cold Specks (I know, I’m sorry), the modern Canadian blues vocalist Al Spx (I’m guessing that’s pronounced like Specks) is now based in London. Spx, previously having recorded under the names of The Hotel Ghost and Basket Of Figs, has surely found her proper incarnation here, as she embodies Johnny Cash with a soulful voice that is just astounding. Think Claire Maguire, only really good. Think Corinne Bailey Rae on crack.
As alluring as the recorded tracks are, the greatest attraction is from the live performances of her songs, which are simply stunning. Listen to this and tell me you didn’t feel those hairs on the back of your neck quivering ever so slightly…
Listen to Holland and Old Stepstone and only fail to be moved if ye have a heart of stone.
Imagine an album of such beauty and austerity all at once. It must happen. The only real question is how she has managed to elude us for so long? She will surely add to the list of amazing Canadian exports, such as Pamela Anderson, Alanis Morissette, and Moosehead beer.
