Benjamin Francis Leftwitch might be a mouthful to say, but he’s not someone you’re going to forget easily. The York-born singer-songwriter released his debut album Last Smoke Before the Snow Storm back in the summer, and been turning fans of all genres completely soppy over his songs ever since. ‘Pictures’, the 3rd single from the release is, for want of a better word, completely lovely, and no exception to this rule.
The lyrics are nonsense, and the tune is a bit “samey”, but from the moment he starts playing there is something captivating about his sound. The repetitive nature of the melody works to calm and almost enchant the listener into a trance-like state. The pattern is sweet, folky and nostalgic and you can’t tear yourself away.
There is something of Nick Drake in the understated purity of BFL and perhaps musically, a little Chris Martin from back in the day when Coldplay wrote songs not anthems. It is not a new sound but a wonderful version of an old one, and can, for the moment, be enjoyed by anyone without pretentions.
