Eugene McGuinness – Shotgun

Eugene McGuinness – Shotgun 2/5

Singer-songwriter Eugene Mcgunness has come a long way since releasing his critically acclaimed debut EP, The Secret Learnings of Eugene McGuinness back in 2007. On “Shotgun”, the latest single from his new album, The Invitation to the Voyage, the indie-pop vocalist unfortunately demonstrates that he still has a great deal to learn before he masters the art of pop music craftsmanship.

Decibels – The Lesser

Decibels – The Lesser 4/5

Northamptonshire-based Decibels have certainly been making themselves heard recently. Gaining airplay on Radio 1, their debut single ‘The Lesser’ infuses indie-electro and catchy choruses with a chunk of garage rock added in for good measure. Ever since the sad passing of the White Stripes, we have been searching for a two-piece boy/ girl duo to fill the Jack and Meg sized gap. Are Blood Red Shoes the answer to our prayers? On the evidence of single ‘Cold’, unfortunately not. Initially intriguing, it is let down by a chorus that fails to maintain the rhythm and drive built up throughout the rest of the song.

Dan Mangan – Rows of Houses

Dan Mangan – Rows of Houses 4/5

Singer-songwriter Dan Mangan’s single “Rows of Houses” is a compelling mix of acoustic folk and swirling reverb-laden guitar, that gets more enjoyable with every listen. Opening beguilingly with a few seconds of hushed strumming, it erupts into life with a sonic assault that is as brilliant as it is unexpected.
